Belledune NB – The Belledune Port Authority (BPA) is pleased to announce MAN Diesel & Turbo Canada Ltd. (MAN Diesel & Turbo) will be the first tenant to occupy the Belledune Modular Fabrication Facility at the Port of Belledune.
“I want to congratulate the staff of the Belledune Port Authority and MAN Diesel & Turbo Canada Ltd. for putting this deal together. Also, I thank all the government officials who had the foresight to support the concept of such infrastructure,” said Mr. Rayburn Doucett, President & CEO of the BPA. “The facility will now be used for what it was designed for by using local contractors and local individuals. I am sure this is the first of many projects this building will house and will continually help our region prove we have the expertise to compete on the world stage. Additionally, our new barge terminal will play an important logistics role since it will serve to transport the modular unit to its final destination.”
Commencing April 2, 2012, MAN Diesel & Turbo will lease the Belledune facility for a five-month period to begin the fabrication and assembly of an electrical module destined for Nunavik, QC. This lease will provide employment opportunities for local contractors, local service providers and the Port of Belledune will see an increase in shipping activity.
“MAN Diesel & Turbo Canada Ltd. will be leasing the Belledune facility for a period of five months to build enclosures, in which MAN gensets and auxiliary equipment will be installed. These enclosures will be shipped by barge to the Raglan Mining Site in northern Quebec for power generation”, says Dave Samson, Managing Director of MAN Diesel & Turbo Canada Ltd. “For the realization of this project we benefit greatly from BPA’s flexibility, the excellent fabrication facility as well as from the strategic location of Belledune Port Authority. We are looking forward to kicking off the project on April 2nd, 2012.”
“Developing supply chain opportunities for existing companies in the region is critical for the growth of our economy,” stated Minister Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and La Francophone. “Through strategic investments like the one we have made in the Modular Fabrication facility in Belledune, we can create opportunities right here in northern New Brunswick that will benefit not only the local economy, but suppliers from all over the province.”
The federal and provincial governments supported the construction of a new facility at the Port of Belledune that would enable the lay-out and production of pre-assembled units for use in local, national and international projects.
“I am pleased to see the progress that has taken place following last year’s announcement of the investments at the Port of Belledune,” said Minister Keith Ashfield, Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. “This project is an important component of Canada’s Atlantic Gateway and I want to congratulate those who made it possible to reach this milestone.”
The Province of New Brunswick invested $7 million towards the construction of the Modular Fabrication Facility while the federal government contributed $1.5-million through the Atlantic Gateway and Trade Corridor Initiative; additionally, ACOA provided a $3.2 million loan toward the project.
“Our government is pleased to see taxpayer dollars invested in this new modular fabrication facility is yielding results,” said Economic Development Minister Paul Robichaud. “Belledune is geographically positioned to accommodate such large scale projects with its modular fabrication facility strategically located next to the Port of Belledune with access to rail and road.” “Jobs and growth are the top priorities for our government,” said Tilly O’Neil-Gordon, Member of Parliament for Miramichi. “The modular fabrication facility allows for both job creation and economic growth and I am happy to see that the facility is ready to take on its first tenants.”
The Belledune Modular Fabrication Facility is a state-of-the-art facility built at the Port of Belledune. Not only does the port connect to strategic shipping routes, it is also an intermodal gateway serviced by CN Railway and has direct congestion-free access to a highway system spanning North America. The BPA is innovative in developing its port services and facilities to the fullest, enabling it to become an anchor of the economy in New Brunswick and eastern Canada. — 30 — For more information contact:
