The First Ship of 2022 has laid anchor at the Port of Belledune
Belledune, New Brunswick, January 5, 2022 – The Belledune Port Authority (BPA) welcomed Captain Shuaib Jafar Lambe, Master of the M.V. “Federal Shimanto”, and the entire 22 person crew as the First Ship of 2022 as they laid anchor at the Port of Belledune on January 2nd. Calling on multi-cargo Terminal 3, the M.V. “Federal Shimanto” is set to take approximately 25,000 MT of wood pellets on board – a commodity that is part of a sector that has grown exponentially over the past few years at the Port of Belledune.
The M.V. “Federal Shimanto” sails under the flag of the Marshall Islands and was built in 2001. It is a bulk carrier operated by Fednav Ltd.
Unfortunately, due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions on gatherings, the usual in-person “First Ship of the Year” ceremony was unable to take place. A commemorative gift in the form of an award will be mailed to the ship’s agent, Calypso Marine Agency, in lieu of the presentation ceremony with the Captain and crew.
“Although we cannot all be together to mark the arrival of the first ship this year, we wanted to take the opportunity to celebrate the M.V. “Federal Shimanto” and its crew for their dedication and commitment to keeping goods flowing”, said Mr. Denis Caron, President & CEO at the BPA. “As we turn the corner into 2022, the BPA’s Master Development Plan is also entering its next phase, Expansion Options. This phase will incorporate public feedback and information from the series of studies that we worked on in 2021 to create a variety of scenarios evaluating the Port’s future expansion opportunities and focus its vision as a leader in green initiatives in northern New Brunswick for the next 30 years. I know that our team at the Port is more than ready for the hard work ahead and we are looking forward to engaging with our partners, stakeholders and the community through 2022!”
